our choices create a ripple. our words carry on in waves. all of our moments create an impact, as strong as a comet’s rage. dreams, aspirations, and wonder; the light and dark inside us we release. our energy inside us is never lost, but transferred, giving us the power to create peace.
every december the company i work for gives the employees a two-day retreat fully focused on bettering ourselves as human beings. this is a unique event that is always rewarding and full of knowledge, but just like gum sticks to the bottom of your shoe, some lessons stick with you more than others. what clung to me so tightly this year was precession; meaning the ripples we send out into the world. we dug deep into how those ripples can either be positive or negative. they can build up an empire of inspiration within someone, or harm, with or without intention… either way, our universe is full of these ripples, created by you and me, each and every day.
this reminded me that i need to pay a hell of a lot more attention, and that every action we do or don’t make casts out an everlasting impression. everything carries on, just as the waves do on the water. it reminded me how big of a responsibility this is, but it also reminded me how connected we are to each other and to everything around us; to the crickets. to the trees, to the blooming flowers in the spring. to the stranger sitting next to you at a coffee shop, or the person in the car sitting next to you at a red light. we are all connected. it is all connected. and perhaps it is true that we may never know where our ripples travel, or how far they go, but sometimes the universe grants us a glimpse.
for me, writing allows me to connect with the people i love, and with people i haven’t had the pleasure to meet yet. when a stranger reaches out to me to say that i helped them find their way out of a rut they felt helplessly stuck in, or that i inspired them to start traveling; i see the ripples. i see why we’re connected. and i’m reminded of why i write. i write for me. but ultimately, i write for you.
even when we can’t see just how far our ripples go, we can stand sure that in sharing our gifts, and sharing our kindness, it allows us to pause and be present. by choosing to have empathy or be present in one simple moment, a beautiful new ripple is born, and begins it’s never-ending journey. those seemingly insignificant actions, words, and moments can cross timezones, climb over the steepest of mountains, spread from coast to coast, from continent to continent. just one moment of being mindful and grateful has the power to inspire without intention. just one moment of kindness can actually change everything.
so when you hear people say that it only takes 10 seconds to change someone’s day, that is the undeniable truth. hold the door open for a stranger. pick up trash when you see it on the ground. call your parents. write a letter to an old friend. ask the cashier how their day is going. be interested. be all there. this is why it’s so critical that we share our thoughts with each other. why it’s important that we remain wide open, instead of shut off and closed.
we have to get more comfortable with leaning into the discomfort of being present. we have to step up to the plate and send these positive waves out into the world that we live and love in. we can never forget that our ripples have the power to heal, and can spread love where hate and pain once called home. our ripples are the legacies we will someday leave behind. and those everlasting waves we create will always be our most important life’s work.
